Here at M.R.S. Communications Ltd, we strive to provide an outstanding service to our clients. That’s why when you work with us, you’ll be assigned a dedicated Account Manager who will be on hand to provide training, answer any questions you might have and keep you up to date on your account.
Our Account Managers have a breadth of experience from various industries and backgrounds, including retail, meaning that they are an extremely knowledgeable team. And, not to mention, they’re extremely passionate about providing towns and cities in the UK with the right radio support.
Meet the team
Sarah Ridings, Account Manager
Having left school at the age of 16, Sarah began an apprenticeship with British Steel before moving into pub management. Sarah was one of the youngest pub managers in the UK at the age of 21, and trained to be an industry manager by studying for a British Institute of Innkeeping qualification. After managing the pub for 4 years, Sarah opted for a change in career and moved from the Midlands to Newport, her hometown, to work for HSBC in their motor and household telesales team. She was quickly promoted to team leader and discovered a passion for helping and supporting new employees learn and understand their role. From her role as a team leader, she then progressed to training manager before taking a maternity break to have her first child.
She then undertook a role at the Celtic Manor Resort in the reception team before moving into the sales team. After 8 years at the resort, Sarah entered the retail industry working for a concession within the Arcadia Group for 10 years. Her role involved managing teams of staff and travelling to the likes of Amsterdam to oversee the merchandising and branding of new stores. Sarah then joined the M.R.S. Communications team in January 2017 as Training Manager before quickly progressing to the role of Account Manager.
In her spare time, Sarah is an avid Formula 1 fan who goes to the British grand prix every year and has even travelled abroad to follow the sport. One thing that Sarah would love to do in the future is a rollercoaster tour of America, which involves travelling on a bus visiting 30 theme parks in 30 days. Ticket to ride!

Hilary Llewellyn, Account Manager
Hilary left school at 16 and studied for an NNEB qualification in college, working a Saturday job in retail. Once qualified she took a role at a private nursery as manager where she worked for 5 years before progressing into the Area Manager role for a further 10 years.
Hilary then trained as an NVQ assessor, assessing and tutoring candidates in childcare. A second job at the same time gave her first experience with a security radio. Following the birth of her son Hilary returned to Nursery Management for a number of years working her way up to Regional Manager and travelling the UK to visit her sites. A complete change in career 2 years later saw her taking her first Account Manager role in employee benefits where after 14 years found herself seeking a new challenge.
Hilary was looking for a role that would challenge her and allow her to implement her skillset, most of which correspond with the responsibilities of an Account Manager. Hilary has been part of the M.R.S. team for over 3 years and her background in retail and has enabled her to empathise with users who aren’t familiar with the equipment, as she has previously been in their position.
When she’s not working, Hilary enjoys finding furnishings for her new house As a massive reader she particularly enjoys romantic thrillers. Hilary sits on the board of a charity as Chairperson and is an active fundraising participant. She hopes one day that she’ll get the opportunity to do a skydive, hopefully for the charity!
“I very much enjoy being around people and would definitely describe myself as a people person – this is one of the reasons I like working at M.R.S. My role as an Account Manager allows me to build relationships with clients and travel around the country meeting them face to face. I also enjoy problem solving and take great satisfaction and pride in being able to help clients overcome issues by helping them implement our products and services.”
Carl Duarte, Key Account Manager
Having a passion for all things tech-related, Carl studied IT at the University of Glamorgan while working part-time alongside his studies at a phone store in Cardiff. Coupling his enjoyment of selling with his passion for tech, he moved to an IT sales role in Bridgend after graduating. After this, he moved from the IT Company into a finance leasing IT Company as an internal manager. The change in sector provided Carl with a welcome challenge, but he missed the face to face customer interaction and involvement with technology. That’s when he came across M.R.S. Communications, and has been part of the team for the best part of 6 months.
During his time off, Carl enjoys spending time with his family and young daughter as well as going for delicious food, visiting national parks and kicking back to watch Netflix. At some point he hopes to visit the big apple, otherwise known as New York City, and head over to Seattle to feast his eyes on the first ever Starbucks.
“One of the things I enjoy most about working at M.R.S. is the satisfaction I get from securing an order and in addition knowing that you are helping a town, city, council or BID make their area safer with a better connected community! I also enjoy the diversity of the role and love discussing communications solutions with new and existing customers.”
John Bartlett, Chairman
John is the son of M.R.S. Communications’ founder, Alan Bartlett, and is dedicated to continuing his father’s legacy at M.R.S. His role as Chairman allows him to have an insight into the daily operations of the company.
John is a big football fan, and follows Cardiff City FC and Liverpool. Music is also a passion for John with particular interest in Status Quo and Queen.
David Horton, Managing Director
David has worked in radio communications his entire life, and is extremely passionate about providing the best quality communication solutions. His initial interest in radio stemmed from a three month long placement at none other than M.R.S. Communications while he was still at school. Following this, his first job was a Radio Engineer for Private Mobile Rentals before moving into the sales team. After five years, David left to join Philips Electronics as a Key Account Manager during which time he implemented one of the first ever shopwatch scheme to help businesses communicate with each other and the local authorities.
David then undertook the role of Major Account Manager at Securicor Radiocoms looking after police and military communications devices. He was appointed the Motorola European sales person of the year during his time here before moving to work for a local Cardiff dealer as a Sales Director. He then worked for Radiocoms and PMR Products before starting his position at M.R.S. Communications in 2011.
Outside of work, David collects diecast police cars – his collection started around six years ago and he currently has over 100 in storage! He also enjoys travelling with his wife, Kim, and appreciates good food. He’d like to travel to Thailand in the future and experience true Thai cuisine.
“My favourite thing about being the Managing Director of M.R.S. Communications is maintaining our position as market leaders in the industry. We are constantly changing and evolving to keep one step ahead and provide our customers with the best service possible, and that’s something that gives me motivation every single day. I also enjoy watching our team grow and helping them in any way I can to develop their experience and knowledge of the industry.”
Pat Bartlett, Director
Pat’s involvement with M.R.S. Communications started in 1978, when the company began. Today, she is the company Director and works with David and her son, John, to ensure that the company continues to be leading innovators of radio communications services.
In her spare time, Pat likes to garden and is an avid reader.
Martin Butler, Technical Manager
Having always been interested in radios, Martin joined the M.R.S. Communications team as an Engineer 31 years ago. Since then, his role has progressed to a Technical Manager. Prior to his time at M.R.S., Martin worked as a Purchasing Manager for an electrical wholesaler after working at a restaurant as a bartender and waiter.
In his spare time, Martin films, edits and produces music videos – from live gigs to acoustic tunes, he’s done it all! He has even filmed in the BBC studios.
“One of the things I most enjoy about my job here at M.R.S Communications is designing and building an effective communications system. It’s always great to hear when towns, cities and BIDs across the UK benefit from our systems. I also like solving problems; if any of our users have specific requirements when it comes to their communications, I enjoy creating an effective solution.”
Neil Court, Communication and Installation Engineer
Neil has been with M.R.S. Communications for 17 years, helping our customers effectively install their communications systems. Before he joined the team, Neil studied an electrical apprenticeship before working as a qualified electrician for 5 years.
When he’s not installing radio systems, Neil enjoys keeping fit by regularly going to the gym and mountain biking; Neil has been a keen mountain biker for over 20 years. In the future, he’d like to spend some time visiting new places in Europe.
“As a Communication and Installation Engineer, I am often required to travel around the country. I love this part of my job, and enjoy getting out and about to meet new customers and help them install their new system.”
Steve Anning, Project Engineer
Steve joined the M.R.S. Communications team in 2014. As a Project Engineer, he ensures that customer requirements are met as well as installing the communications system. Before his role at M.R.S., Steve spent two years installing broadband and TV for Virgin Media and also spent 8 years in the Gwent Police running the radio communications department.
As a football fan, Steve plays five-a-side in his spare time as well as going to the gym to keep fit and healthy. He also enjoys playing golf and watching sports while socialising with friends. At some point in the future, Steve would also like to do a coast to coast trip across the USA.
“I always enjoy helping customers implement their new communications system. It’s extremely satisfying to be part of the process from start to finish, and see how our equipment and expertise benefits towns, cities and BIDs. Meeting new people and visiting new places is also a great part of the job – no two days are the same!”
Wayne Russell, Engineer
Having worked at M.R.S. Communications for 28 years, Wayne is extremely experienced and knowledgeable in radio communications. Prior to joining the team, Wayne worked with mobile phones and has always had an interest in technology and communications.
When he’s not at work, Wayne is part of a choir and enjoys caravan holidays around the UK – his favourite spot is Devon. He also hopes to travel to Thailand at some point in the future.
“There’s a lot of variety in my role working at M.R.S. Communications. I am often travelling around the country meeting customers and visiting new places, which is great. I still enjoy my job just as much as when I first started almost 30 years ago – I am passionate about the work I do and it’s always a bonus to see how our work benefits local communities.”
Nigel Paul, Engineer
Nigel completed a City and Guilds course at college before going on to work in television and radio. After returning from Jersey, Nigel was looking for a role in two-way radio and communications. Thankfully, he came across M.R.S. Communications – and 28 years later, he’s still part of the team.
During his free time, Nigel likes to surf in Porthcawl (when the Welsh weather allows!), socialise with his friends and watch live bands. He’s particularly keen to see more of the world, especially Australia, Indonesia and Bali. He also has friends and family in California that he’d like to visit one day.
“My role at M.R.S. Communications is quite varied, and I’m often out and about meeting customers and installing new systems. One of my favourite parts of the job is solving any problems that customers have. As a team, we always ensure that our customers have the best possible system for their needs. If any changes or adaptations are needed, we are more than happy to help.”
Vanessa Horne, PA/Office Manager
Prior to joining M.R.S. in 2014, Vanessa has developed a variety of skills throughout her career. She began working for a label printing firm as a Receptionist for her first job, which was then followed by a role at a marketing company in Cardiff. After this, she worked as a Clerical Assistant for an insurance company and a building firm before joining an engineering business in Cardiff Bay undertaking a variety of roles starting in the position of Receptionist before developing into the planning side of the business and dealing with finances. She then moved to Cyrus Engineering where she worked as a Commercial Manager and Personal Assistant to the Managing Director.
Vanessa then became an Office Manager for a food manufacturing company before progressing to a Supply Chain Manager, where she was responsible for the day to day running of the purchasing of a food manufacturing site and liaising with retailers and the organisations in the private sector.
At M.R.S., Vanessa is responsible for managing the day to day running of the office. She puts processes and planning in place to improve systems while developing personnel and team. Her role also involves generating reports, monitoring accounts in line with FCA guidelines, health and safety, dealing with sales enquiries, procurement management, invoices, contracts and more.
In her spare time, Vanessa likes to be outside in nature, whether that be going for long walks or heading away on a sunny caravan holiday. She also enjoys upcycling items that she finds at antique fairs and is absolutely besotted with dogs!
“I thoroughly enjoy the versatility of my role at M.R.S., and like having a variety of tasks to work on. It’s also great to know that our company is helping people all around the country. The team here at M.R.S. are so dedicated to providing a high level of service, and they really care about how they can help customers.”
Sarah Jenkins, Customer support
Before joining the team at M.R.S. 17 years ago, Sarah worked for Greenham Trading for four years as an Administrator before being promoted to Office Manager. After this, she worked for Maddocks for 12 years in the sales team. Sarah’s role involves ordering equipment for customers, sending all parcels, taking phone calls from customers and directing queries to the right place.
When not at work, Sarah enjoys watching rugby – particularly when her 25 year old son plays for the local team, Caerphilly. She also enjoys socialising with friends and travelling around the UK.
“My role at M.R.S. is quite varied, and that’s something I really enjoy. It’s also great to work with such a variety of people.”
Elaine Medcraft, Customer Support
Elaine began her career as a clerk typist before having a maternity break and spending time with her family. She then worked for Sony in Bridgend before heading back to college to renew her skills. Upon completing the course, she joined the council offices to gain some work experience before applying to M.R.S. 14 years ago. Her role involves processing orders, dealing with customer queries and licensing problems, handling radio returns, invoicing and more.
When she’s not at work, Elaine enjoys walking, caravanning in the UK and overseas, and spending time with her grandchildren. She also hopes to summit Mount Snowdon one day as she’s made it halfway in the past!
“I’ve been at M.R.S for 14 years, and the company has evolved a lot over time. It’s safe to say that no two days are the same, and that’s what I enjoy.”
Claire Osborne, Shared Revenue Manager
Before joining M.R.S. 13 years ago, Claire trained at an accounting school. Her role at the company saw her working in credit control, but she has since progressed to dealing with other various finance tasks.
Claire enjoys walking her dogs and spending time with her granddaughter. She also hopes to move somewhere sunny one day.
“My position at M.R.S. involves quite a diversity of tasks, which I love – and I get to work with great people which is an added bonus.”
Clare Vanstone, Finance
Clare trained to be an Accountant while working at Cardiff Metropolitan University in the accounts department. She then undertook various accounting positions before joining the team at M.R.S. four years ago.
Clare enjoys spending time with her toddler, cooking, reading and watching rugby. She hopes to watch a rugby tour in New Zealand at some point in the future.
“As a methodical person, I enjoy the daily challenges that I face in my role and working towards a solution. It’s extremely satisfying!”
